Report of the Director of the State Institution

On February 5, 2025, a meeting of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine

The meeting was attended by the Director of the State Institution “Institute of Environmental Geochemistry of the NAS of Ukraine”, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine Yuriy Zabulonov, with a report: “Innovative approaches to the processing of radioactive waste (RW) from nuclear fuel cycle facilities in order to achieve the goals of sustainable development of the state”.

The Institute has developed a new method of plasma-chemical decontamination of dumps contaminated with radionuclides, thanks to which it is possible to obtain deactivated rock and deactivated water suitable for further technological needs; a highly active concentrate intended for long-term storage in special storage facilities of radioactive waste storage facilities. An innovative plasma-chemical technology for the purification of liquid radioactive waste (LRW) “PLASMA-SORB” has been created, which is based on the use of new approaches to obtaining volumetric low-temperature plasma. Studies of real LRW from the “Shelter” facility of the Chernobyl NPP in full-scale conditions have shown the high efficiency of the developed multi-stage method of their purification (99%).
The latest approaches of the Academy’s scientists have found wide practical application, in particular, various modifications of plasma-chemical installations have been tested in Japan (Fukushima), Kazakhstan (“EL Invest”, Astana), and England (ANAMAD, Sussex Innovation Centre).
