ON THE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH OF RADON CONCENTRATION IN SOILS OF THE KYIV AGGLOMERATION
Annotation. The results of a study of radon (²²²Rn) concentration in the soils of the Kyiv agglomeration at a depth of 1 m are presented. The total area covered by the research is 95 km². Field measurements were carried out at 50 observation points using an NC-482B scintillation device. The recorded radon concentration values range from 0.015 to 9.723 kBq/m³, with an average value of 2.21 kBq/m³. According to the applied classification model, all measured values fall into the category of low radon risk (<10 kBq/m³), which does not require mandatory radon-protection measures during construction within the study area. The conducted study of radon concentration in the soils of the Kyiv agglomeration made it possible to assess the radon risks of the region for the first time. The pattern of radon-field distribution in the soils of the Kyiv agglomeration is mosaic, with high and low concentration values dispersed throughout the entire study area. Comparison of geological, geomorphological, and tectonic elements revealed no correlation with the spatial distribution of radon concentration. Measurements showed that radon concentration values range from 0.015 to 9.723 kBq/m³, with an average of 2.21 kBq/m³. According to the Swedish classification model, all identified values belong to the low-risk category, which eliminates the need for special radon-protection measures during construction. The obtained results should be considered as a preliminary regional assessment of the radon risk of the studied area.
