BENTONITE CLAYS FOR SAFE DECONTAMINATION OF THE NPP DRAIN WATER AND RADIOACTIVE WASTE DISPOSAL: RADIOGEOCHEMICAL STUDIES

Abstract.  The paper presents the results of mineralogical (chemical and mineral composition) and physicochemical (granulometry, specific surface area, thermal stability, cation exchange capacity) analyses of natural (NB) and Na-modified bentonites from the Cherkasy deposit for the removal of radionuclides from the NPP drain waters and isolation barriers in near-surface radioactive waste disposal facilities in model solutions of groundwater by industrial natural and Na-modified bentonites. The studied bentonite properties affect the technical and functional characteristics of the radionuclide removal from the NPP drain waters and engineered isolation barriers of near-surface radioactive waste disposal facilities.

Keywords: bentonite, Cherkasy deposit, sorption, radionuclides, physicochemical properties, radioactive waste disposal, NPP drain waters.
