THE ASSESSMENT OF GAS STATIONS IMPACT ON GEOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT AND PEDOSPHERE
Abstract. Gas stations are important elements of urban transport infrastructure. However, their proximity to residential buildings raises concerns. Despite well developed regulations and modern equipment installed at gas stations their negative environmental impacts are still possible. The paper presents the analysis of preconditions, sources and consequences of petrochemical pollution halos formation. The date from drilling at the area of two station under reconstruction demonstrated the presence of petroleum vapors at the depth of 1.8-2.8 m, while lenses of liquid fuel were located much deeper. To prevent petroleum fuels from entering valuable aquifers, atmospheric air via vaporization and soil contamination from the uplift of pollution with precipitations it is necessary to control the composition of soil air and monitor the impact area for the presence of indicator species, where it is possible. To guarantee the protection of groundwater and soils from the technogenic impact of gas stations, a thorough periodic inspection of the condition of the equipment is necessary, and it is advisable to conduct monitoring drilling if there are valuable aquifers in the impact area. The formation of pollution halos could be also detected testing composition of soil air and samples of groundwater in the gas station impact area.
